Handmade Valentines Day Gifts for your Sweetie or Special Friend

Thursday, February 11th, 2010
It’s going to be that special time of year again. It’s the day that we express our feelings to our loved ones and let them know how we feel. And not only is it a day of sweethearts, but you can also express your admiration to those special friends to whom you are close to. You don’t’ have to be attached to celebrate Valentines Day. Take a girl’s night out to celebrate womanhood, or children can share their love with their parents too.

While the holiday can seem somewhat commercialized, there are gifts that you can create from your own imagination and heart. With some kind words, a little inspiration and creativity, and your own two hands, you can tell someone how you really feel on Valentines Day.

If you are the poetic type, or you like to express your thoughts and feelings in words, try writing a special poem, or even making a handmade valentine day card. Think of the person that you would like to make this gift for. Write down some of the qualities that you really admire in this person. You can even describe how they look to you, or how their emotions around you, make you a happy person. The poem and greeting doesn’t have to rhyme. Whatever you have to say, write it from your heart. You can write or type it on some pretty paper with special colored background and frame it if you would like to make a poem. For greeting cards, find some colored stock paper, and then fold your greeting inside. Tie some pretty ribbon, add some Valentines Day stickers, and a personal touch. Put in some movie tickets from a first date; add a small printout from a favorite movie, television show, or product. This can be a unique and personalized card for that special person in your life.

Another great idea for Valentines Day can be a portrait gift. Find a picture of the two of you during a happy or humorous moment. Place it on a scrapbook page, and add some of your own words with the page. Add stickers, ribbon, or anything else that would describe the relationship that you have with this person. Then find a pretty frame in a store to put it in. This would be a treasured photo to have displayed in your home for decoration.

Last of all, you could create a treasure hunt within a box of candies. If you’re special somebody is a candy or chocolate fanatic, create a mini treasure hunt within the candy. If it’s a female, try placing a pretty pair of earrings underneath one of the candies, or a necklace. Or if you would like to propose marriage, this would be a great place to put the engagement ring. For males, you could fold a t-shirt within the box, put a box of cologne inside some pretty foil wrap surrounded by candy, or place sports trading cards underneath pieces of candy within a box too. Your gift can hide within all of the candies and become a delicious adventure for the both of you.

By adding some fun, sweets, and words from the heart, any Valentine Day gift can be made special. Gifts are especially beautiful when they are created from the person that you care about the most. Thoughtful gifts don’t always come from the store, they come from the heart.

The Perfect Valentines Day Gift

Friday, January 1st, 2010
Valentine’s Day is traditionally a day that celebrates love, particularly that of the courtly, romantic and erotic kind. What is the ideal gift? This is a question that ultimately, only the giver and recipient can answer for themselves, although I certainly have some suggestions, but first a little history of Valentines Day.

The origins of Valentine’s day aren’t entirely clear. There is a strong connection to the ancient Roman festival of Lupercalia, which was held on the ides of February and dedicated to the god of fertility, Faunus. Valentinus was apparently an early Christian priest who, during the reign of Claudius II, performed secret marriages for young people during a time when the Roman emperor had outlawed the sacrament. Valentinus was later executed, becoming a martyr and eventually a saint.

The decision to celebrate the saint’s day on February 14th may have been an attempt to “Christianize” the popular Lupercalia festival, although many vestiges of the original pagan customs remain. The first recorded Valentine gift was a poem, composed by the Duke of Orleans in 1415 as he was held prisoner in the Tower of London following the Battle of Agincourt. Meanwhile, the English king who put him there - Henry V - hired a writer named John Lydgate to compose a Valentine message to his future queen, Catherine of Valois. The custom of exchanging affectionate notes grew over the next half-millennium, and remains one of the most popular Valentine expressions today.

The most popular gifts for Valentines Day now are cards, candy and flowers. Of course, the tradition of exchanging cards is a very old one as we’ve seen – but while these appeal to the heart, erotic love is still very much about the senses. Since its introduction into Western culture (it was unknown outside of Mesoamerica prior to the late 16th Century), chocolate in all its forms has become the most popular confection on the planet. Not only does it taste wonderful, the substance contains chemical compounds that act on the brain in ways that release endorphins – the same chemicals that surge through our bodies when we fall in love. Small wonder that gift baskets full of gourmet chocolates are always appreciated.

Scent is another sense that has great bearing on feelings of eroticism. Since time immemorial, men and women alike have used the juices of flowers and other plants to make themselves smell attractive, and of course pheromones – subtle, almost undetectable molecules of scent given off by all mammals – have been a signal of sexual receptivity for millions of years. Is it possible that the use of perfumes and colognes are attempts to amplify or imitate the effects of pheromones? I think so, which is why I recommend gift baskets filled with herbal soaps and aromatic candles. Not only might these finely scented gifts tune into a more carnal instinct, they will also certainly be appreciated and used making them a wonderful gift sure to inspire a big smile.

Of course, we cannot forget color. Although it may vary from one culture to the next, in the West, pink, white and red have been the traditional colors of love – white for purity, pink for emotion, and red for sexuality. It’s why roses of those colors are always so popular on Valentines Day. I would suggest flowers as a wonderful gift for Valentines Day, although remember that flowers should only be an opener, you must be able to do at least one better than flowers. I would also recommend trying to bring all your gifts together with one theme. For instance if you have gotten white and pink flowers, try finding gift baskets in just those colors, thus tying all your gifts together.

Massage can also be a great Valentines Day gift. Massage helps to send the message that you really appreciate all the hardwork someone puts into your relationships and shared life. Best of all you can choose to reward them with a luxurious full body massage or fun gift of corporate massage right in their office.

Most importantly remember that personalized gifts mean more than anything else. Be sure that each gift has its own meaning and is special. This can be ensured by you the giver – if you haven’t already, create a reason why you are giving each gift, it will make each one that much more special.

Words as the Perfect Valentine Day Gift

Saturday, November 7th, 2009
What makes the ideal valentine day gift? If you’re thinking of chocolate as the ideal valentine day gift, then you are close. After all, most people like chocolate and most people like gifts. Combine the two and you have a mouth watering valentine day gift that your intended romance will be unable to resist. However we think that the ideal valentine day gift is something a little closer to the heart, one that will say “This valentine day gift was created especially for you”.

A perfect valentine day gift is a personalized valentine day gift because this will not only show the object of your affections that you have taken their uniqueness into consideration, but also that you’re willing to go that extra mile. And contrary to popular belief, the most effective and remembered valentine day gift is usually the ones that do not cost too much and yet lasts for a lifetime. They are the valentine day gifts that don’t necessarily glitter and shine. A simple voice recording in a MiniMe, a miniature likeness of you, is a perfect valentine day gift, one that can be kept for years and years. Combine this with flowers, chocolates, and a romantic dinner for two, then you’ve got yourself one amazing valentine day gift.

In fact, words are probably one of the most precious items you can give as a valentine day gift because it conveys a sincerity about that which is happening in your person – a dedication of an abstract part of yourself, verbally. Better still if your loved one can hear it in your own voice coming from a MiniMe.

Recorded messages in a MiniMe would constitute a perfect valentine day gift. However, some find it hard to place a message because they cannot find the right words to express themselves. For this, you can try the following:

•Poetry – Do you need to be a poet to write a poem that will make the ultimate valentine day gift? No. It’s all about conveying the endearing sentiment and putting in the effort to create the perfect valentine day gift for the one you love. Choose a favorite line from a poem that can effectively show what you mean.

•Music – Ah, the language of love and capable of saying the things you can’t find the words for. As a valentine day gift, it will make the ideal gift and not only remain in the memory for years to come, but in the heart as well. And the good thing here is that you’ll be able to say what you wish to say with music as a valentine day gift with more than one song.

The perfect valentine day gift is in fact one that comes from the heart, as Valentine’s Day is a day to celebrate the abstract capacity of our most vital of organs, the heart. So take the time to think about that special valentine day gift and whether it will be appreciated the way you intend. In addition, be creative and combine your personalized valentine day gift with other valentine day gifts (who can say no to more than one valentine day gift?) to emphasize your feeling and the commitment you have to it.

How to Buy a Valentines Day Gift for the Opposite Sex

Thursday, October 1st, 2009
As every man knows, and as every woman knows, shopping for the opposite sex and deciding which Valentines Day gift to get is one of the most difficult things to do. As such, here are some tips to help you along a bit and give you a couple of tips regarding Valentines Day gifts.

For Him

Having trouble getting a Valentines Day gift for your man? Well fear not, because we might just shed the necessary light on the subject. You see, buying Valentines Day gifts for men needn’t be that hard as it simply requires a bit of understanding of the man you’re with and what men, in general, prefer.

To start off on the quest for that ultimate Valentines Day gift, think about your man’s hobbies. In this case you will have to include watching TV as a hobby, BBQ, fixing the car even if it isn’t broken, etc. The obvious Valentines day gifts will, of course, have something to do with any of these - TV remotes as a Valentines day gift (only if it is an improvement on the old one), BBQ tongs or perhaps even an apron as an appropriate Valentines day gift and, of course, the preferred Valentine’s day gift by many men, tools (improved function, yet again).

As you can see, the perfect Valentines Day gift for most, but not all men, is something that can be used. Therefore, avoid ornamental items and in quite a number of cases, avoid clothes (except if your man prefers you buying him clothes).

For Her

Most men out there will agree that buying Valentines Day gift for women isn’t always that easy. Reasons for this include the natural abstract aspect of the psyche (emotions, feelings and their feminine interpretation) as well as specific tastes.

A good way to go about buying that perfect Valentines Day gift for your loved one is to do a little research first: favorite color? Collections, such as antiques, different epochs in history, art, etc? And, most importantly, what will they appreciate most in terms of a Valentines Day gift? For some women the answer lies in an ornamental Valentines Day gift, for others it’s a Valentines Day gift they’ll be able to use or wear. But by combining all those little facts you know about your loved one, you’ll pretty much get the picture of what Valentines Day gift to buy and what it should look like.

The Perfect Valentines Day Gift

If at this point, you still can’t decide on what Valentines Day gift to give, you can give yourself instead, literally, in a miniature likeness of you, a MiniMe. A MiniMe captures that likeness of you that has endeared you to your loved one. You can even record a personal message to your loved one. Something like how much that person means to you to as simple as saying “I love you.” With this as a Valentines Day gift, it is not only unique but will remind your beloved everyday how much they mean to you.

Valentine’s Day is the day we celebrate Love, and as such it will only be fitting to take some time to think of the perfect things to say to the object of your fondest affections. It will definitely be a Valentines Day gift that would last decades.

Ideas For Valentines Day Gifts

Saturday, September 12th, 2009
If you have a look around the shopping malls you will see that there are lots of advertisements for gifts for your Valentine. The question is which one do you buy?

How well do you know your Valentine? Have you been together days, weeks, months or years? What you spend your money on may be dependent on the length of your relationship.

I admit that I am a bit of a romantic. I like to spoil my husband at opportune moments. I have cooked him 3 course gourmet meals, massaged him after a weary day at work and we have been known to share a bubble bath complete with a nice cold glass of white wine. I have put together my list of romantic gift ideas for you and your loved one to make Valentines Day a special occasion for you both.

Flowers always get received well. But, you do not have to spend a small fortune on a dozen red roses:-

*A single red rose is just as welcome and some women feel that it is also very romantic. If you feel like spending a little bit more why not team it with a

cute teddy bear, box of chocolates or even her favorite perfume.

*As an alternative to the red rose why not buy a potted plant;

*Seeds or bulbs. You can plant these in the garden together and enjoy the color when they flower.

*Artificial Flowers are a good alternative, particularly if your Valentine has an allergic reaction to pollen!

*Make up a gardening hamper with a book on gardening, some seeds and bulbs,a pair of gloves and maybe a voucher offering your services.

A vacation or a weekend away is an excellent idea. But, you may need to discuss it with your partner first as they may have work or family commitments that cannot be rearranged. You also need to check that they are fine with the sleeping arrangements, particularly if you have not been together long. They may not wish to share a room with you so early on in the relationship.

Can you afford the trip? If you invite your Valentine away then he/she may assume that you are paying. Make sure that you make it clear to them what you are expecting them to pay towards, if anything. I am sure that they would not be happy if you took them away to a secluded island which cost a lot of money and you expected them to pay half!

Let Food Be The Language of Love.

*Book a table at your favorite restaurant but be aware that you may have to book several weeks in advance for popular restaurants and make sure that your date will like the food.

*Cook a meal at home. It does not have to be something extravagant, just something that you will both enjoy. Perhaps you could cook it together. A few candles and some soft music will make your evening even more romantic.

*Have food delivered to your door and watch a movie. No cooking or tidying away dirty plates afterwards; more time to spend with each other. Fill a basket with a DVD of their favorite movie, popcorn and a bottle of wine, dim the lights and settle down for a cozy night in together.

*Picnic down by the river. If the weather turns cold or it starts to rain gather up your hamper and go back to your place to eat. Tip: make sure that you have tidied up before you go out!

A day out at a sporting event or concert. If you do not already know ask your Valentine if there is a particular sporting event or concert that they are interested in? Purchase tickets in advance to avoid disappointment on the day.

A trip to the theater/cinema or opera. Ask your Valentine if there is anything at the theatre or cinema that they would like to see and purchase tickets. Perhaps you could go for dinner after the show.

Hot Air Balloon/Helicopter Ride. A hot air balloon or helicopter ride is an expensive gift so make sure that your Valentine does not mind heights! You could take him/her on a scenic trip over the city that you live in or perhaps over the countryside and then cozy up afterwards and discuss it over coffee.

A day at a health spa or pampering session. What a nice way to make your Valentine feel special. Take some time away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and have some relaxing time together at a health spa. This will need to be planned ahead particularly if you have children, you will need to find someone to look after them for you. If you do not have the time to spend a full day at a health spa you could arrange for a couple of pampering treatments. Some beauty parlors let you pay for treatments in advance and may even provide you with a voucher to present to your Valentine on Valentines Day.

If you are on a tight budget or you would like to give your Valentine something unique you could try one of the following:

Homemade candles. Kits can be bought from the craft shop and you make your own, choosing the color and scent if you wish.

Journal or Scrapbook. Write a journal of the time that you have been together; include photographs of the two of you, postcards of places that you have visited and poems. You can both sit down and read it and reminisce about the times that you have shared.

Compile a CD with your favorite music on. If there are some love songs that remind you of special moments that you have shared why not compile a CD with them on. You could also design a cover which will make it even more unique.

Whatever you decide to do I am sure that your Valentine will feel that they are the most special person in your life on the most romantic day in the year.

There are as many Valentines Day gift ideas as there are types of personalities. Those with a practical bent would be most appreciative of an item that would make their lives more manageable and efficient. A new computer just might meet the task on that one. Perhaps a household appliance or lawnmower would work just as dandy for the one with a fondness for and a natural inclination towards the pragmatic sort of life.

The other side of the spectrum would be the hopeless romantics that would just curl up and die if presented any of these choices. You know those mushy types, don’t you? Love and romance is nothing to take lightly with them. It’s all about an emotionally bonding expression of undefiled love. Get the other half a tad misty-eyed and victory is in the bag for you.

What type of Valentines Day gift ideas would be suitable here? One superb option to consider would be Valentines Day Gift Baskets which could score you bonus points on the lovey-dovey side of life. Yes friends, this gift solution can contain anything from gourmet chocolate and plush teddy bears to sensual chocolate body frosting and massage oil. Create your Own Valentines Day Gift Basket

Sunday, April 5th, 2009
A homemade Valentines Day gift basket is a wonderful way to express your love and devotion on this special day. It can be a nice gift for a couple as well as for an individual. If you are searching for a gift basket for a romantic couple, you can really personalize it by making it yourself.

In keeping with the Valentine’s Day theme, begin by choosing either a heart shaped container or a red container. This could be an unbreakable bowl, a tin box container, or a wicker or wire basket. Add either red or white purchased shred to help hold the gift and food items in place.

A champagne or wine theme would make a nice gift for a couple. Use a taller container such as a wine cooler or ice bucket, which will easily hold a bottle of wine or champagne. Place shred or straw in the container first so the bottle will be cushioned. Add a scented candle, CD or romantic music, book of poetry, a box of chocolates, or a can of mixed nuts.

Spa and bath products are another nice theme with a romantic touch. Again, this is an appropriate theme for either an individual or for a couple. A wicker or wire basket is a useful container as it can be used to organize bath products later on. There are so many different bath products to choose from or you can even make them yourself with the numerous recipes offered online. It’s nice to choose bubble bath, bath salts, body lotions, and a scented candle all in the same scent. Place a net sponge, bar of soap, rolled up wash cloth, and a loofah amongst the bath products. Scatter small silk flowers or rose petals between the gifts.

A basket full of sweets is great for anyone. In addition to chocolates and other candies, add several individually wrapped homemade heart shaped cookies, gourmet coffee, or herbal tea bags and finish your gift basket by scattering Hershey’s Kisses throughout the basket.
